why/how is degeneracy removed in an octahedral crystal field? what happens to d orbital energies..?

i know for the octahedral field it splits into a higher and lower energy:

but how do i explain why the degeneracy is removed?

The d orbitals are no longer degenerate because of electrostatic repulsion between the ligands and the electrons in the d orbitals. The orbitals whose lobes are pointed directly at the ligands in the complex will experience more repulsion and will go up in energy removing the degeneracy.

As for square planar complexes, the splitting looks like this:

You can figure this out by doing a “tetragonal distortion” of an octahedral complex, which means you elongate the bonds in the z direction and squeeze the bonds in the xy plane. This will cause the dz^2 orbital to go down in energy and the dx^2-y^2 and dxy orbitals will go down in energy, arriving at the diagram above.
